The first step in overcoming the issues associated with Irlen Syndrome is getting a proper diagnosis and determining specific areas of difficulty and sensitivity. At Irlen Centre Edmonton, we offering screenings for those who believe they may be affected by the condition.
Our screenings are a 2-hour consultation process. Black geometric figures on a white background are used to determine if the individual has a visual processing disorder. This disorder results from the individual’s difficulty with processing certain parts of the light spectrum, and this often interferes with academic learning. Once problems are documented, 10 different colours of overlay are compared over a page of black print on a white background to determine if the use of colour reduces the documented issues. Overlays, samples of the colour of paper for worksheets or forms, and a report are all provided. A screening costs $300 plus GST.
Not only do we screen individuals for Irlen Syndrome, we also provide two-and-a-half-day training sessions for people to learn to become Irlen screeners. These are available at specified times of the year. Training is available for individuals with an undergraduate degree and teaching credential or license or a degree in areas such as education, psychology, speech/language pathology, occupational therapy and counseling. Two years experience working in the degreed field is also an asset.
